Full Service Fiber Optic Equipment Calibration You Can Count On

It's fairly simple but important.
The NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) defines a measurement so that both the item being measured (your equipment) and their measurement is a match. In other words, your equipment is calibrated against the standards that are set by this federal agency. The calibration has been verified through an unbroken chain of documents.

What is an unbroken chain of documents?
Your piece of equipment is compared to our piece of equipment which in turn was compared to a piece of equipment from the NIST which is within a stated tolerance. The NIST set the tolerance and it is correct. Our equipment was compared to the NIST equipment so we know ours is correct. Finally, yours is compared to ours and found to be correct. That is an unbroken chain. This unbroken chain which is traced back NIST standard for accurate measurement is how uniformity is maintained.

Why should I care?
You want to reduce the uncertainty in your measurements and increase your customers' confidence in the information you provide them. In short, the fiber you installed was installed correctly and has minimal loss.

Even better. We are ISO 9001-2015 Certified.
This important compliance indicates our company's excellence in product quality and service. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) often calls for us to test instrumentation so we have a documented NIST certification. ISO is the world's largest non-governmental developer of standards.

Did you know that according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, a fusion splicer on average earns $56,750.00 annually?

That number can go up near $100,000 for more specilaized job sites. Now just think if your splicer fails you...you are losing a nice piece of the pie! Losing money is one issue, slowing down the job is another. To ensure your unit is always in prime condition and awaiting your next job, remember to have that little companion serviced. Take advantage of the time when you are between jobs, by sending your gear to Fiber Instrument Sales so we can ensure it is in working correctly making sure it will not fail you when needed most.

Ignoring regular service can cost you. Not only thosands in repair, but even more down time on the job. On average a repair can take up to four weeks. For a seasoned splicer operator that can be thousands of dollars lost, not to mention a delay in the job.

What do we see when a unit comes in that has not been serviced as scheduled?

  • Contamination/Damaged V-Grooves
  • Dirty Camera Lenses
  • Dust on the camera board
  • Damaged or misaligned electrodes
  • Debris inside the unit causing motor issues

All of which will cause inferior splices. Something no one wants with their installation. Can you prevent all or some of these issues? Absolutely! The reality is, after time in the field, especially under harsh conditions, these issues are going to happen. No one can prevent the months of dirt and debris from getting into these machines.

Generally, it is recommended that a splicer should at least be serviced annually. However, depending on your working conditions, units require some love and attention after just one job! You the technician, are the first line of defense. You are the one who uses it. Often you can tell if it is not working at optimal performance. If you believe it needs some work, even though it may have been serviced a few months ago, then trust your technical experience. In the world of splicing, it is always much better to be safe than sorry.

Your signal will suffer. Ignore the service on your equipment and the quality of your splice will suffer. In our lab here at FIS, we can perform general maintenance on the most popular fusion splicers in as little as five days. If your machine needs repairs we will also work directly with most manufacturers. We can handle the entire process for you. Regardless of whether a large or small service issue or repair FIS will make sure the job is done quickly, correctly with no effort on your part. Send it in we will do the rest!

Fiber optic testing has become at the forefront of today's applications. Today there is an ever-increasing demand for new as well as existing fiber optic networks. There is a need for faster networks. Customers not only want this service, but they are also demanding it. As this demand increases so does the pressure on our existing infrastructure. The last issue you want is a network not working up to capacity. You need to know if your network is performing the way it should. Certification of today's networks requires the right equipment in correct working order. Individual fiber components need to be tested. This includes connectors, fiber cable and splices. Good test equipment properly calibrated will help you determine if you have an excessive loss in the network. As the demand for bandwidth increases, your test equipment must be maintained. Testing with faulty equipment will cost you time, money, and make unhappy customers.

Calibration

FIS Calibration and Verification service ensure your fiber optic test equipment remains accurate.

It is recommended practice to keep fiber optic test equipment calibrated in measurement to ensure fast troubleshooting when locating network failures or when providing optical attenuation or optical cable length certification results.  These records are required to close out a project and receive final payment.

American Standards Lab, a division of Fiber Instrument Sales Inc. can provide verification and/or calibration documents on several fiber optic testers such as OTDRs, Power Meters, and Optical Loss Test Sets manufactured by Fiber Instrument Sales, AFL, EXFO, Anritsu, Viavi, Fluke, Tempo, Greenlee and Trend Networks to ensure network owners of accurate measurements.  All calibration and verification equipment is inspected and calibrated to NIST traceable standards, to ensure equipment is in conformance with the manufacturer’s specifications.  NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) defines a measurement so that both the item being measured (your equipment) and referenced measurement is a match.

Fusion Splicer maintenance can avoid unnecessary downtime during projects resulting in lost revenue.  Underlying issues with fiber optic fusion splicer can be contamination or damaged V-Grooves, dirty or soiled camera lenses, dusty camera boards, damaged or misaligned electrodes, and simply debris inside the splicer case causing motor issues with alignment and cameras.   The end result is poor fusion splices and potentially delayed projects with issues identified later during testing or certification phase. Therefore, fusion splicer deep cleaning and tune-up service is recommended annually to clean, replace electrodes and inspect the overall operation of fiber optic fusion splicer manufactured by Fiber Instrument Sales(FIS), AFL, Sumitomo, Fitel, OFS, FiberFox, Greenlee, Ilsentech/UCL and Swift.
