A fiber optic scribe will produce a quality cleave in an optical fiber. This scribe is done to create a precision controlled break. This break creates a perpendicular flat surface at the end face of glass fibers. The procedure is known as the scribe-and-tension strategy or the scribe-and-break strategy. First the fiber has to be stripped of its’ protective sleeve. Then the precise control of the scribe is used to produce a small crack in the surface of the fiber. After that pressure is applied to that same area. This causes the fiber to cleave and make a clean break. A good cleave is produced by a quality blade and is required for a successful low loss splice of the optical fiber.
